about me.

I’m Ruth and I am 26 years old. In 2019, I completed a double degree of Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Media and Communications studies at Wollongong University. I chose to study law for a few different reasons. One being the many different aspects of law there is to study, as well as it is, in my opinion, something that will always be relevant to all civilisations and something everyone encounters on a daily basis, whether knowingly or not.

However, I wanted to keep my options as open as possible with respect to career progression and so I enrolled into a double degree. With the development and seemingly unstoppable growth of communication technologies, as well as increasing users, we are seeing a blurring of the traditional distinctions between the private and public domains, as more people are sharing their personal and private lives in a public manner.  I am interested in how the law is going to balance the competing interests of public and private distinctions in a world in which these distinctions are becoming less identifiable.

For me, I have always been interested in writing, travel, music, culture, fashion and media so I felt that enrolling into a media and communications degree as my second degree would allow me to continue exploring my more creative interests in the hopes to eventually land a position around media and intellectual property law.

Media is an open book documenting lives and stories, constantly being rewritten, edited, cut and pasted and that is why I enjoy all things media related. Whether it is your own story or someone else’s story, there is always a story to be told, heard or seen and the existence of media is such an exciting prospect for anyone wanting to listen, see or be heard or seen.  Essentially, law is the same. It is constantly being rewritten and adapted to new situations and changing social climates. It is for these reasons that I love law and media and their ever-evolving dynamics.

Welcome to my story-so-far. This blog was set up for the purpose of documenting certain subjects taken for different media and communications subjects throughout my degree and contains articles written in response to assigned tasks during those subjects.
